Most small businesses respond to accessibility risk by installing an overlay widget — a snippet of code that promises to make a site accessible automatically for a few hundred dollars a year (accessiBe's widget starts at $490/year). The evidence says that doesn't work:
- 69% of companies sued in the first half of 2025 were using a widget or overlay when they were sued (UsableNet).
- The Overlay Fact Sheet, signed by more than 700 accessibility professionals, states plainly that overlays do not make websites compliant.
- In 2025 the FTC ordered accessiBe to pay $1 million for deceptive claims that its AI widget made websites WCAG-compliant.
- Many lawsuits target companies with under $25M in revenue — 1,103 of them in e-commerce alone (UsableNet). This is a small-business problem.

Honest answers
Will an AccessFix audit make my site legally compliant?
No one can honestly promise that. Compliance depends on the full WCAG standard, much of which needs human judgment, and on how courts and regulators apply the law. What an audit does: find the fixable problems, prioritise them, and document that you're addressing them in good faith. For legal questions, talk to a lawyer — we're not one.

I'm a small business. Does this really apply to me?
In the US, ADA website lawsuits routinely target small companies — UsableNet counted 1,103 e-commerce suits against businesses under $25M revenue. In the EU, the European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to covered services including e-commerce, and can apply even if your business is based outside the EU when you sell into it (microenterprises providing services have a specific exemption — our EAA guide explains).
